Hoteliers Karin Hamerlynck and Edwin van der Meijde commissioned me to furnish the Suitehotel Pincoffs largest suite. Being given artistic freedom, I was to revive the raw romance of the Rotterdam harbour. The suite has a surface area of no less than 70 square meters. Internationally there is a certain image of the Netherlands in general and Rotterdam in particular: one of adventurous pioneers, a seafaring nation but also the old masters in the Rijksmuseum, delftware, hypermodern design and bicycles. I was certainly willing to fulfil this image, albeit not exemplarily. I wanted to avoid a clichéd approach of the basic idea; I did, however, want to express it through unique manufactured and exclusive top pieces within the concept of reuse, recycling and durability. To this end, I selected a group of artists and approached prominent sponsors for each separate component. |
