PINCOFFS SUITE HOTEL COMPLETED
After a yearlong renovation of the monumental former harbour customs office, Pincoffs Suite Hotel has opened its doors to guests on March 1st last. Hoteliers Karin Hamerlynck and Edwin van der Meijde commissioned me to furnish the hotel’s largest suite. Being given artistic freedom, I was to revive the raw romance of the Rotterdam harbour. The suite has a surface area of no less than 70 square meters.

MARTEN MEES BUSINESS SUITE
Internationally there is a certain image of the Netherlands in general and Rotterdam in particular: one of adventurous pioneers, a seafaring nation but also the old masters in the Rijksmuseum, delftware, hypermodern design and bicycles. I was certainly willing to fulfil this image, albeit not exemplarily. I wanted to avoid a clichéd approach of the basic idea; I did, however, want to express it through unique manufactured and exclusive top pieces within the concept of reuse, recycling and durability. To this end, I selected a group of artists and approached prominent sponsors for each separate component.

KONINKLIJKE ARHEND BV
The former seventeenth-century kitchen now serves as a multimedia room and has been equipped with a robust conference table made of former mooring posts by Jan Korbes, Garbage Architecture. Above it are two monumental lamps, made of ancient sea maps by Michael Bom, Bomdesign. Apart from commissioning these two pieces, Royal Ahrend provided a renewed edition of the famous Revolt conference chair by Friso Kramer to complete the arrangement.

DUCTH ORIGINALS
In the bedroom are two original De Wit rocking chairs, provided by Gebroeders van der Stroom BV furniture factory. Especially for this suite, Marlene den Dekker upholstered the chairs with burlap mailbags of the former Dutch mail firm PTT. As a reference to communication, love letters and bygone romance, this design is called Post Modern.

KONINKLIJKE PORCELEYNE FLESCH
The suite has two bathrooms, one of which has a bathtub, the other a luxurious shower/steam cabin. As an exception, Royal Delft provided the breakages of delftware products. Artist Inge Suttorp used these fragments to create authentic mosaics in both bathrooms.

KONINKLIJKE TALENS
Also situated in the bedroom is a monumental oil painting by yours truly entitled ‘Een gespreid bedje 2008’ [A Well-spread Bed 2008] [the Dutch expression ‘In een gespreid bedje komen’ meaning ‘Having it made’, transl.]. The painting measures 3 by 4 metres, making it the largest canvas in my 20-year career. The work was painted on site during the construction and renovation work in the building. Royal Talens provided the required oil paint from the Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Amsterdam series, as well as all brushes and various mixing media.

VREDESTEIN BANDEN BV
Upon entering the hall, one sees a rubber side table and next to the luxurious Auping bed are two rubber bedside tables tailor-made by Jan-Willem van Breugel, Wheels on Fire. Vredestein Banden BV provided the old rubber bicycle inner tubes and commissioned the artist with this work entitled Retyred Tables.

HET RESULTAAT
Another beautiful addition to the room is the Felt Wardrobe by Charlotte Kusters, Charlotte Kusters Ontwerpen. Based upon the classic Dutch flared model, she tailor-made this tactile wardrobe from recycled under felt, suited for storing evening gowns and coats.
The bedroom is all perfect with an impressive photo piece by Susan the Kruiff, De Kruiff Kunstprojecten: ‘Leven uit een Koffer’ [Live out of a Suitcase], which was shown in an eponymous exhibition on the Gorcum Museum in 2007.

Summarizing, with the commitment of all artists involved and the products created for this suite it has become a unique room, not to be found anywhere else. A business suite of international standing, providing Suite Hotel Pincoffs with a very special conference location, combined (if so desired) with a stay of several days in artistic, inspiring and unconventional surroundings.
